eNASCAR Coke: Casey Kirwan back in the ‘W’ column with epic win at Talladega

Whether you’re watching eNASCAR’s version of The Closer or the virtual Mr. Excitement,” Casey Kirwan (XSET) got eNASCAR Nation buzzing again after claiming another incredible win in the closing moments of Tuesday night’s race (April 18) at Talladega Superspeedway.

It was the last time the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series went to Superspeedway racing in 2023. As with the previous two races this season alone and last season’s epic finish at Talladega, it was the final moments that mattered as the field raced to the finish line.

Malik Ray (Jim Beaver Esports) finally seemed to have a win on his hands and seemed on the verge of scoring his first career win as Graham Bowlin (Charlotte Phoenix) and Darik Bourdeau (Elliott Sadler Esports) behind him in second and three failed.

Kirwan had the best chance in fourth, but without a nudge he didn’t have the momentum he needed. Collin Bowden (eRacr) had Wyatt Tinsley (Kansas City Pioneers) taped to his bumper so he had the momentum but there probably wasn’t enough time to get to victory. Kirwan saw the opportunity in the game and seized the moment.

After an incredible move to line up the tandem kick from behind, Kirwan shot past Ray to earn his first win of the 2023 season, his fourth win of his career in 98 starts. Malik would have to settle for second place again, dejected at another slipping away. Bowden stopped as the meat finished third in the Bump Draft Sandwich.

KIRWAN: “SHOT OF A LIFETIME”

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Finally won one of those record races. We positioned ourselves all night and the maps eventually went our way. Huge shoutout @M_Ganzoo for the calls upstairs all night. Time to celebrate with a Biggie bag from @Wendys. Let’s gooooooooooooooo pic.twitter.com/E53nNhLS94

Back in Daytona, Kirwan’s block against Tucker Minter (Team Dillon Esports) was just slightly mistimed, sending the 2022 champion into the virtual wall while Minter scored the win. On Tuesday night, Kirwan pulled one of the most incredible and unlikely moves from the lessons learned to steal the win from his former Deadzone teammate.

“I don’t think I would beat him to the finish line,” Kirwan said after the race. “I looked in the mirror real quick and saw Bowden coming and I just made a sharp right and prayed I’d keep going straight. It was the shot of my life.”

Kirwan’s three other victories come from Bristol Motor Speedway, Michigan International Speedway and Pocono Raceway. Although Talladega was the series’ defending champion and an all-time leader at the superspeedway-style circuits, it was his first win at such a circuit in the series.

Kirwan led the most rounds with just 11 and led the most important. He secured his spot in the 2023 playoffs, the first step in his quest to defend his 2022 series title.

RAY ON FIXED SENTENCES: ‘EVERYBODY TOOK EVERY RUN THEY HAD’

Bowden leads Talladega

For the first time in the history of the series, the setup was determined so that all 39 drivers in the field had the same settings. In short, this meant that the backend teams didn’t have to spend countless hours a week trying to find every thousandth of a second of speed.

With all drivers having the same setup it was really unclear who would win but still the same suspects found their way to the front. Kirwan, Bowden and Ray are the “Big Three” if you will in this type of race.

So did it make a difference in the product viewers could see at home or in the competition? If you ask these three, they really didn’t see much of a difference. “I don’t think it changed the way we raced,” Ray said. “I don’t think anyone would complain if Talladega or Daytona were permanent, it really doesn’t make much of a difference,” added Kirwan.

UP NEXT: RIDERS SHOULD HIT OR HOLD IT IN LAS VEGAS

The eNASCAR ranks return to their regular two-week hiatus after Talladega as the series returns May 2 with the seventh race of the season in Las Vegas. Vegas, followed by Darlington, Charlotte and Gateway will be the first regular intermediate leg of the season. Also note that the 11th race of the season, originally scheduled for Watkins Glen, has been replaced with the Chicago Street Course.

Back to Vegas in two weeks, things kick off with the eNASCAR Countdown to Green, now presented by Wendy’s, starting at 8:30pm EDT / 1:30am BST. The race itself starts at 9pm EDT / 2am BST. Evan Posocco, Blake McCandless, Alan Cavanna, Camille Salazar Hadaway and James Pike are expected to be in attendance.

The broadcast will be available at eNASCAR.com/live or on iRacing’s social channels.
