F1 23 kicks off on June 16th with a full calendar, overhauled handling and red flags

Not only will we see the return of Braking Point, the immersive story mode starring Aiden Jackson and Devon Butler, but the new game will also include new physics improvements and, above all, the complete list of drivers, teams and tracks of the Formula 1 -Season 2023 from day one.

FULL SCHEDULE 2023, PLUS SOME EXTRAS

As we hoped and expected, the full calendar for the 2023 edition of the Formula 1 schedule will be included in the new game. This includes new venues from launch such as the new Las Vegas Strip Street Course in the US and the Losail International Circuit in Qatar.

Las Vegas is brand new this year. In previous iterations of the F1 games, newer tracks (like Jeddah in 2021) were added post-release. Losail was on the schedule before – in 2021. However, that was so late in the season that it was never added to the game. So this will be his debut in F1 23.

There will be three bonus tracks that are not on the 2023 schedule but have been used in previous seasons. These tracks include the Circuit Paul Ricard in France, the Shanghai International Circuit in China and the Algarve International Circuit (aka Portimão) in Portugal. We suppose since they already exist it helps expand online multiplayer variety.

RED FLAG RE-INTRODUCTION

The last Formula 1 game developed by Codemasters to feature red flags triggered after a pile-up was F1 2014. They’ve been missing ever since, but last year’s Frontier’s F1 Manager 2022 included them and would be something of a more faithful F1 game fan might ask.

How it will work will likely be similar, although lately we’ve seen real-world red flags for less than a real-world pileup, so it’ll be interesting to see how common or rare they become, or if options will be available.

HANDLING IMPROVED? PREDICTABLE, AT LEAST…

Russel f1 23

EA Sports F1 22 included a new tire model and a more “lifelike” handling system. This will be further enhanced when the series releases its 23rd installment. F1 22’s cars had a fast oversteer feel, resulting in unsuspecting drivers looping more often than not.

It was hard to gauge the sense of impending spin even through a direct-drive steering wheel, and in our opinion even harder with a gear/belt-driven wheel. EA says these improvements should deliver “more predictable” properties. We’ll see when we get our hands on the game at a later date.

This sits alongside what EA calls Precision Drive – all you need to know is that gamepad users should have it easier.

WILL PODIUM PASS BE REFRESHED WITH F1 WORLD?

F1 22 Podium Pass Series 5

Podium Pass has been in Formula 1 games since F1 2020 and has remained largely the same since then. It includes optional challenges in Grand Prix and Time Trial modes that award XP. With these XP you level up and as you move from one level to the next you unlock cosmetic items such as car liveries or driver outfits. In F1 22, this included furniture for “F1 Life”.

The announcement doesn’t mention Podium Pass, but F1 23 is expected to include an F1 World hub. It sounds oddly similar but offers some notable differences from what Podium Pass used to be, notably a new progression system and some sort of auto-upgrades will be achievable. How it will ultimately be monetized is yet to be confirmed, but we can say that PitCoin, the virtual currency in Podium Pass, is at least making a comeback.

BRAKING POINT CONTINUE WITH BRAKING POINT 2

Remember F1 2021 when we were introduced to Aiden Jackson, grey-haired veteran Casper Akkerman’s young new teammate? Two years later, the story continues for young Aiden as he joins a brand new team, the Konnersport Racing Team. His teammate has already been announced – Devon Butler.

“The return of Braking Point allows players to immerse themselves in a racing story that offers a unique look at F1 alongside the authentic racing features our players know and love,” said Lee Mather, Senior Creative Director at Codemasters.

Jackson and Butler return, and the premise of the story will be a fictional F2 champion in Callie Mayer, who happens to be Devon Butler’s sister. Really interesting dynamic in the game as Callie shoots for a seat at the table but the new Konnersport F1 team will have to decide if she gets her brother’s seat or Aiden’s place.

For what it’s worth, F1 22 had NO story mode at all. Braking Point 2 will certainly be a welcome addition and offer more gameplay.
