Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 Turbocharged will be released in October with bikes and a story

The first Hot Wheels Unleashed game surprised us. Sure it looks good, great even, but then we got our hands on it and were amazed by the ridiculous track designs and exciting career.

With the sequel now setting a precedent, developer Milestone must now attempt to surpass what we felt was one of his best efforts of all time.

No gameplay has been released yet, but the first trailer shows what’s looking like in terms of both the level design backdrops and the expanded gameplay – this particular race starts in a home office setup and then heads outdoors onto grass and through sand – and a vehicle guy, with an ATV and a monster truck.

Five environments are included for the circuits to be created:

  • backyard
  • arcade
  • miniature golf course
  • Gas station
  • track space

Two new driving mechanics

The ability to drift around corners and drive down straights remains, but there’s also the ability to jump – which superficially reminds us of LEGO 2K Drive – and “lateral sprint”.

Jumping should serve to find secret shortcuts. In the first game, timing the boost at certain points could cause you to cut course, but now it seems to be built in as a more prominent mechanic. Sideways Dash, meanwhile, could be used to dodge the “Module” traps or invade rivals.

Debut on two wheels

In addition to the ATVs mentioned above, there are also motorcycles, so you can ride alongside your four-wheeled opponents. The last time we enjoyed a racing game that successfully combined bikes, cars, and monster trucks was Sony’s Motorstorm – so let’s hope for a taste of that vibe, please.

The total number of players this time is “over 130” and the ability to upgrade vehicles remains.

Story-based campaign

In the original game you would unlock new events on a rather adorable toy car map, but this time a story – featuring four original characters – has been superimposed on animated cutscenes.

New game modes are said to be included, however there are currently no details as to what these include. Cross-platform multiplayer returns (added to the original post-launch), as does local split-screen, an overhauled track editor, and the livery and decal editor. All user-generated content is also cross-platform, except for those on Switch.

With over two million units sold, the 2021 game was the most successful game ever developed by Milestone.

Editions and DLC

The first game came with optional post-release DLC and two season passes. The same applies to the second.

In addition to two volumes of Season Pass content, further packages are to be pre-ordered, but the exact content has not yet been determined.

In addition to the Standard Edition, a Deluxe Edition includes two bonus packs and the Season Pass for Volume 1. A Legendary Edition includes two additional packs as well as Volumes 1 and 2 of the Season Pass.

Meanwhile, the physical version of Day One includes four bonus digital vehicles, and a physical version of Pure Fire also includes a die-cast Hot Wheels model.

Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 Turbocharged is coming to PC (Steam and Epic), Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.

It is worth noting that the studio has focused exclusively on the current consoles with the upcoming Ride 5.
