Lap Time Challenge from Gran Turismo 7, April 27th to May 11th: triple threat

To celebrate the release of Gran Turismo 7’s v1.32 update, Polyphony Digital has offered players the opportunity to compete in not one, not two, but three Lap Time Challenge time trials for free. And one could lead directly to qualification for the Olympic Esports Series 2023!

We’ve covered the Olympic Lap Time Challenge in a separate article (it’s a pretty big deal after all), but there are two other juicy credit payouts to come over the next two weeks, including one from the Red Bull Ring and the other on the recently redesigned Fuji International Speedway.

Lap Time Challenge B

In the second Lap Time Challenge, the brand new (for Gran Turismo 7) Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo will be put through its paces on the redesigned Fuji International Speedway. Well, you could choose another Gr.3 car, but why wouldn’t you pick the new kid on the block?

Although the car has undergone extensive development over the winter – check out the latest update from Assetto Corsa Competizione for more info – the 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT3 is essentially the same racer that dominated global GT3 racing last year.

Given the number of amateur drivers taking part, it is crucial in GT racing to simply drive the car. This makes it our recommended car for Lap Time Challenge B.

A new Gr.3 car will always be popular in GT7 and if you look at the Lap Time Challenge leaderboard this is definitely the case where at the time of release the Spaniard ‘J.Serrano’ was leading with 1:39.216 Their Stuttgart speedster is top of the overall ranking.

You can check out that obscenely fast lap below.

As you can see, carrying the speed through Fuji’s wide-open corners is crucial, as the Mercedes-AMG is able to easily maintain traction in high-speed corners thanks to its motorsport-honed aerodynamics package.

Lap Time Challenge C

Lap Time Challenge from Gran Turismo 7, April 27th to May 11th: triple threat

We’re heading to Austria’s Red Bull Ring for the last of the available lap time challenges, but note that this is only available until May 4th.

The car given to us is the beautiful Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm ’20 Super Sedan. It first appeared in GT7 with the game’s 1.27 update and is a sportier derivative of the base Quadrifoglio model. The Quadrifoglio represented a turning point in Alfa Romeo’s carmaking history thanks to its superb dynamics and lush Ferrari V6 engine.

And that’s before we mention how good it looks. With a snazzy rear wing reminiscent of the 156 GTA, the car looks fast when stationary. But don’t worry, with over 500 horsepower on tap there’s plenty of muscle to match its beauty: exiting the tight hairpin at Turn 3 of the Red Bull Ring is a tricky task to manage the power oversteer.

At the time of publication, Canadian “Lester” holds the fastest time with a 1:37.971 (see below), illustrating the need to keep this beefy Italian muscle car straight in the traction zones while maintaining its momentum through red the Bull’s medium-speed corners Ring.

This is especially true as players are forced to use hard compound sport tires.

GT7 Lap Time Challenge is a time trial mode where you compete against other players to set the fastest time on the leaderboard. There is one caveat, though: if you complete a lap within three percent of the fastest time, you’ll get 2,000,000 credits.

If you’re not fast enough, lapping within five percent awards 1,000,000 credits, while a time within 10 percent of the fastest results in a 250,000 credit payout. With over 4,000,000 credits at stake just for these two lap time challenge events, there’s never been a better time to top up your GT7 bank balance.
