Lap Time Challenge from Gran Turismo 7, March 30th to April 13th: Sports Cars

This week’s Gran Turismo 7 lap time challenge is a bit of a strange affair. Not only does it take place at the somewhat seedy Autopolis International Raceway – famed for once having an eccentric Picasso owner – but we were also loaded up with a minivan to drive. Exciting things.

For anyone who wants to express the difficulty of climbing a European mountain in vehicle form, Polyphony Digital is for you. Yes, the Toyota Alphard is the subject of the two-week lap time challenge, and its sporting performance may surprise.

Introduced in Gran Turismo 7 with today’s (March 30th, 2023) update v1.31, the Alphard is a front-engined, four-wheel-drive sleeper, thanks largely to its powerful 296hp V6 engine.

Although the Toyota weighs more than two tons, it can accelerate to 100 km/h in less than eight seconds, which is not bad at all for a seven-seater van (or the more appropriate term “sports car”). Its full name is ‘Toyota Alphard Executive Lounge’, which is fairly appropriate given Heathrow’s size.

But around the twisty corners of Autopolis’ Short Course layout, the Toyota struggles with body roll, making it an unwieldy thing to toss around. Luckily, four-wheel drive saves the day here, offering confidence under braking.

However, there’s no chance to tweak the Alphard, depriving players of an opportunity to sort out the damp suspension and sluggish handling. A little weight saving wouldn’t hurt either.

GT7 Lap Time Challenge is a time trial mode where you compete against other players to set the fastest time on the leaderboard. There is one caveat, though: if you complete a lap within three percent of the fastest time, you’ll get 2,000,000 credits.

If you’re not fast enough, lapping within five percent awards 1,000,000 credits, while a time within 10 percent of the fastest results in a 250,000 credit payout.

At the time of publication, Australian rider “MetalGear9493” holds the top spot in the overall standings with a 1:26.421. Can you get close enough to earn a cool 2,000,000 credits?
