Lap Time Challenge of Gran Turismo 7, 15th-29th June: Watkins Sprint

Another Gran Turismo 7 Lap Challenge is here after driving a wet Tsukuba in an Audi TTS Coupe last week. This time we’re heading across the pond to Watkins Glen, where players can choose from Gran Turismo 7’s line of Gr.4 vehicles.

The Glen’s long course layout is commonly referred to as a “boat” because of its distinctive routing and heel-and-toe corners. Although it has hosted Formula 1, Can-Am and IndyCar in the past, it still enjoys great popularity with NASCAR and IMSA today.

When it comes to vehicle selection, Jaguar’s F-Type Gr.4 is the number one choice. Perhaps one of the most beautiful cars of all time, the V8-powered British monster is reminiscent of the subtle curves of the classic E-Type of the sixties.

There was even a GT4 version for the British GT Championship, with two Jaguar F-Type SVRs built for Invictus Games Racing. The team was formed to provide disabled Armed Forces veterans the opportunity to work in motorsport while providing support and rehabilitation.

In real life, the cars were beautifully presented, but it was Jaguar’s brutal V8 exhaust note that stole the show, emitting a harsh tone that was copied from its GT7 counterpart.

At the time of publication, the fastest lap was set by GT7 player DannyR_3967 with a time of 1:53.843. The lap shown above shows how aggressively you need to attack the wide curbs of Watkins Glen to get the fastest exit speed possible.

Turn 1 is the most important corner of the lap as the exit leads to the longest flat-out section of the entire circuit, only stopped by the high-speed inside loop or bus stop chicane. This part of the track allows you to farm with track bumps and use all the curbs (and more) to maintain corner speed.

The rest of the loop at Watkins consists of taking on the banked turns, including the outside loop and slide. These require less braking than expected, as you can use the camber to hurl your car toward the exit. After the relatively slow corners 8 and 9, all you have to do is brake in the last two corners and you’re back on the start/finish straight.

GT7’s Lap Time Challenge is a time trial mode where you compete against other players to set the fastest time on the leaderboard. However, there is a caveat: completing a lap within three percent of the fastest time awards the player 2,000,000 credits.

If you’re not fast enough, a lap time within five percent will award you 1,000,000 credits, while a time within 10 percent of the fastest time will result in a payout of 250,000 credits.

Recommended car: Jaguar F-Type Gr.4 (Brand Central 350,000 credits or free rental)
