Lap Time Challenge of Gran Turismo 7, 16th-30th March: Wild Horses

Gran Turismo 7’s latest lap time challenge features the 2015 Ford Mustang GT at Laguna Seca.

This week’s Gran Turismo 7 Lap Time Challenge comes from the historic Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California, where you drive Ford’s most famous horse car: the Mustang.

Originally released in 1964, the Mustang was a fully customizable muscle car. Thanks to its long hood and short rear end, the car exuded aggressiveness and was soon a hit among American workers, with hundreds of thousands sold.

In fact, the Mustang’s success almost single-handedly led to the development of other rival muscle car models, including the Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger, and Pontiac Firebird. In nature, a Mustang is an untameable wild horse, quite fitting if you’ve ever seen a Ford Mustang exiting a car meet.

Although the Mustang model has been in production since its inception, becoming Ford’s longest-lasting model, subsequent editions have largely retained the proportions of this early, iconic shape made famous by the Steve McQueen film Bullitt and its popular 1968 chase sequence . (Let’s not talk about the fourth generation cars though, ok?).

The sixth generation version of the Mustang fielded in this two-week lap time challenge is the first to feature a factory right-hand drive option and be available for purchase from overseas Ford dealerships in the UK and beyond.

Surprisingly, Ford also offers this Mustang with a four-cylinder EcoBoost engine, as well as a V6 and the more traditional V8. Unsurprisingly, the eight-cylinder remains the most popular choice, and it’s this example we’ll use to tackle Laguna Seca.

Racing began at the California venue in 1957, and its layout has remained largely unchanged since then, with sandy run-off areas and huge elevation changes – including the frightening Corkscrew roller coaster ride. The key to a good lap time here is to keep things clean, or the dusty drain will drag you into the deeper sand.

GT7 Lap Time Challenge is a time trial mode where you compete against other players to set the fastest time on the leaderboard. There is one caveat, though: if you complete a lap within three percent of the fastest time, you’ll get 2,000,000 credits.

If you’re not fast enough, lapping within five percent awards 1,000,000 credits, while a time within 10 percent of the fastest results in a 250,000 credit payout.

At the time of publication, Japanese rider “Rafaele-M” holds the top spot in the overall standings with a 1:26.857. Can you get close enough to earn some credits? Follow our advice below and hopefully the answer is yes! Much luck!

First, take a wide line into the Andretti hairpin as this opens the exit to Turn 3, with an early turn required for Turn 4 as it leads into the cambered Turn 5. Use the grade to slow the car It’s important to drain the power early for the climb to the invisible apex of Turn 6 and the subsequent climb to the corkscrew.

Once there, try to stay close to the first vertex: this will prime you perfectly for a straight run through the second clipping point (note that the shortcut penalty is set to Hard, so if you occupying too much space here will invalidate your aim lap).

Follow a flat line into the Rainey corner – again using the berm to help the car turn – before diving into Turn 10. Make sure you don’t carry too much speed as the camber drops off quickly at the exit. It’s best to sacrifice your speed into the following tight Turn 11 for a clean exit onto the start/finish straight and the fastest possible lap time.

Your car can also be tuned to a certain extent, with a power and weight limit of 443 hp and a minimum of 1,300 kg. Add as much power and weight reduction as possible via the tuning shop and optimize the results with ballast and power limiter upgrades. Obviously, adding a wing will also help tame this ferocious beast…
