MotoGP 23: This is how the sprint races work

What are sprint races?

The sprint format, introduced in motorcycle Grands Prix races in 2023, consists of an additional half-distance race on each Saturday of the MotoGP calendar, with the men’s race remaining on Sundays.

What is the MotoGP sprint race format?

A sprint race is 50 percent of the distance of the main race at any MotoGP event.

The starting grid is based on the qualifying results, with the main race also having the same starting grid – the sprint race does not contribute to the starting order.

It all starts on the Friday of a race weekend with the best laps from practice 1 and practice 2 together. The top 10 drivers on this list automatically advance to the second part of qualifying, which takes place on Saturday.

Everyone else outside of this top 10 must compete in Q1, with the results bottoming the grid for the sprint and feature races. However, the top two from Q1 join Q2 with the top 10 from practice. The times from Q2 occupy the top 12 places on the starting grid for the sprint and main races.

Up to 12 points will be awarded for sprint race results as follows:

  1. 12 points
  2. 9 points
  3. 7 points
  4. 6 points
  5. 5 points
  6. 4 points
  7. 3 points
  8. 2 points

  2. 20 points
  3. 15 points
  4. 13 points
  5. 11 points

You can also choose not to attend a session by unchecking the box next to each session on the weekend options page.

So if you just want to compete in the main race, uncheck everything else and then select your desired starting position. Or you might want to do the sprint and race, or all weekend, or just qualifying and the feature race. There are several conditions to choose from.
