Need for Speed Unbound Volume 2 update adds daily challenges and online cops

The first major post-release patch for Need for Speed Unbound, titled “Volume 2,” is the first in a series of updates and includes more ways to earn XP and Bank.

The first major post-release update for Need for Speed Unbound Volume 2 is rolling out this month for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox players.

Released in November 2022, Unbound is seen by many as a return to form for the long-running open-world driver series. However, the lumbering ark and youthful aesthetic might not be for everyone.

Thankfully, developer Criterion Games – these days with the added support of several former Codemasters employees – continues to support the game, with Volume 2 set to be the first in a “series” of updates that will offer more ways to earn that lucrative commodity: cash.

A set of new challenges

40 new challenges are added in Volume 2, with one of the most notable changes being the creation of Rumble Races. A new event type alongside the existing point-to-point, circuit and drift events, for example, we’ll hopefully see how these develop before the update launches. They’ll see you compete against friends on the city’s takeover courses.

Additional long-distance events will also be added to the roster, with a bit of luck you can earn more cash at the end of each day.

Also contributing to this are the 30-second time trial events called Hot Laps and Playlist Events, which are online events that combine three challenges in a row.

A feature of Unbound is its inclusion of character customization with real-world fashion brands, which we’re mostly ambivalent about. Balmain is one such fashion house, and completing a new playlist event unlocks a uniquely themed Lotus Emira, representing Parisian style icons.

This is already in the game, powered by the character Eléonore, but now it could be yours. There’s also a stylized Nissan for those who subscribe to EA Play, and some new teasers like “The Ultimate Luxury.”

Daily Events

The daily challenges remind us, at least superficially, of the network-connected events of the 2015 Need for Speed reboot (or was it a reboot? Yeah, we saw Scream VI last night, okay…), and the daily challenges are now in Unbound to be included.

We believe this has nothing to do with the game’s own daily time cycle, but with real-world timing. In theory, three new in-game events appear every 24 hours to earn extra XP and money, or “bank” in Need for Speed lingo.

Daily Challenges in Need for Speed 2015Also in Need for Speed 2015 there were three daily challenges. Will Unbound look like this?

Hopefully this is something that will help you save up a little faster for that first body kit or crate engine in the early stages.

Online Cops

For those racing online, there has been an odd police omission up to this point. Offline, the cops have a strong presence during the main career and you try to shake them off after most events and keep an eye on your Heat.

However, after the Volume 2 update, players will be able to roll dice online with the cops and engage in multiplayer chases.

More Rewards, Map Unlock DLC

For those who like the visual gems, more driving effects, character victory poses and decals will be added, as well as the option of a paid DLC unlock called “Key to the Map”, which will reveal the location of 260 collectibles on the map for $4.99 revealed.

We like to try and find them ourselves and explore the area but understand that trying to do so with a higher heat can get frustrating so the option is there if you want it. Remember the guidelines of the optional Treasure Map DLC for Forza Horizon 5.

Need for Speed Unbound Volume 2, New Car Effects

What doesn’t currently appear to be included are new vehicles in the list, but we’ll be sure to lend a hand when the update arrives next week.

Need for Speed Unbound Volume 2 release date

Volume 2 of Need for Speed Unbound will be released on March 21, 2023 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
