Williams Esports takes iRacing Nürburgring 24h overall victory

The latest iRacing special event for 2023 took place last weekend with four time slots of the 24h Nürburgring. Top esports organizations lined up for the third time slot, which started at 12:00 GMT and was broadcast live on RaceSpotTV on their own channels as well as the official iRacing Twitch channel.

After a long day and night (and back to day) at the Green Hell, Mercedes-AMG took the top two steps of the podium, with Team Williams Esports at the top but just ahead of Team URANO eSports. BMW would complete the last place on the podium with the Redline team in third place in the highest GT3 class.

There were a total of five classes at the special event weekend. There were two multi-car classes in GT3 (Mercedes-AMG, BMW, Porsche) and GT4 (Aston Martin and Porsche). There were three brand classes with the Porsche 992 Cup, the Audi RS 3 LMS and the Toyota GR86.

A long struggle of attrition

A total of 54 teams with at least two drivers were registered for the Top Split event. There were 11 teams per class, except for the slowest class, the Toyota GR86 Spec class, which fortunately only had 10 teams. Rainer Talver brought Team BMW Bank, one of the BS+COMPETITION rides together with Kay Kaschube and Phil Denes, to pole position.

Sami-Matti Trogen qualified for the Williams Esports Chillblast #150 and placed it on the outside bar. The eventual winners in the Mercedes-AMG Team Williams Esports entry would start from sixth position.

In the lower classes, the top qualifiers were Alessandro Bico for Williams Esports Razer in the 992, Sven Haase for Grid-and-Go.com eSports #001 in the GT4 and Michael Polasek for 24 Hours For World Central Kitchen #45 in the Audi and Jaden Munoz for the #16 HydroRace Geodesic Racing Gold Team in the Toyota GR86.

Less than half of the teams that started the race managed to get the required fair share. None of the fastest qualifying teams for each class would take the overall win and only one of them (Williams Esports Razer) would even finish the race as it finished second.

The controversy erupts again

One of the more controversial incidents to hit social media was the incident between eventual winners Mercedes-AMG Team Williams Esports and then GT4 class leaders MAHLE RACING TEAM, also racing under the BS+ COMPETITION banner.

During the night shift in simulation mode, the faster Mercedes-AMG GT3 quickly pulled up to the rear bumper of the #10 GT4 Aston Martin. At a spot on the Nordschleife not normally known as an overshoot zone, the Williams glanced inward as the MAHLE machine gave just enough to fit a car.

There was certainly netcode contact, but as the announcers implied, it looked like contact was likely to happen one way or another. As a result, the leading GT4 was knocked out before half the track. Williams Esports was already embroiled in controversy during Daytona 24, but it appears to be more of a racing incident than anything else.

However, given the ongoing controversies with the side, their reputation will not be improved by another dismal victory. On the other hand, Williams Esports is unbeaten in 24-hour events on iRacing in 2023.

VERSTAPPEN AND TEAM REDLINE FINALLY FINISH ONE

Speaking of netcode contact and controversy: At the last long-distance event in the iRacing Special Events calendar in Sebring, the race of two-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen was ended prematurely because he had gotten a meatball from netcode contact, which caused him and his Teammates from Team Redline failed ‘ chances.

This time it seemed to be a smooth race for the real life sim racing superstar. Verstappen was paired with Porsche TAG Heuer Esports Supercup Champion Diogo Pinto as well as fellow Team Redline standout Ole Steinbraten.

The Redline trio was able to complete all 176 rides around the Kombiring, but just under three and a half minutes behind the winners. Max set the fastest lap for the team on lap 67 with 7:59.117 seconds. Apparently those who watched the Team Redline stream also had some decent stories to tell from Max.
