Future MXGP games in doubt

An official statement from Milestone suggests that the future of the MXGP gaming series is in doubt as there will be no new title coming out in 2022.

The future of the official games of the FIM Motocross World Championship (MXGP) appears in doubt based on an official statement from series developer Milestone.

The Italian studio is also responsible for the Monster Energy Supercross gaming franchise but confirmed that no new MXGP game would be held this year

“As a point of reference for lovers of two-wheel racing video games, we found it difficult to make the decision not to release a new chapter of the MXGP series,” the statement reads.

“Our love for dirt bikes is far from over though; See you at a new starting gate,” it concluded.

When Traxion.GG asked for clarification – whether this is a year off or no more MXGP titles at all – Milestone declined to elaborate further.

Of course, the disappearance of every officially licensed series from the gaming space is a blow, but the statement suggests that Milestone will continue to work on off-road motorcycle games in the future – although this is likely referring to Monster Energy Supercross 6, which is releasing in should be March of this year.

If MXGP 2021 becomes Milestone’s final FIM Motocross World Championship game, it will complete the developers’ longest-running franchise after the MotoGP series. Milestone’s first MXGP game, MXGP: The Official Motocross Videogame, was released on November 18, 2014, with sequels to follow every 12 months (except 2015).

Milestone’s future

MXGP games have arguably lagged behind the Supercross series of late, with Traxion.GG’s review of MXGP 2021 suggesting that “it’s time to push further innovation with the next installment”.

Significantly, MXGP 2021 only achieved a “Consider” rating as opposed to Monster Energy Supercross 5’s “Wish List”, despite the two titles sharing a game engine and key gameplay mechanics.

Milestone isn’t turning its back on motorcycle games entirely, however, as it looks to build on its first official World Superbike Championship game in 10 years (SBK 22), the MotoGP franchise, and its next entry in the Ride series of games.
